about

Mic Crenshaw can be found rocking local stages and airwaves on KBOO in Portland, Oregon. He is currently gearing up for another tour of Africa in November with The Afrikan Hip-Hop Caravan where he tours various countries in Africa bringing his message through Hip-Hop.

“Growing up I would hear and read statistics that said that 25% of all black men between the ages of early teens to mid twenties were in prison, on probation or parole. Interpersonal violence, addiction and diseases like HIV/AIDS were taking us to early graves disproportionately. This was in the 80's but the narrative has continues to this day with police violence and the prison industrial complex being exposed and our prime adversaries. I would come to have conversations with my brothers in light of theses statistics, propaganda and information depending on how we perceived it. Ultimately some of us would arrive at the conclusion that just surviving somewhat healthy and in tact was indeed a heroic feat. That’s where the concept for the song came from in my mind. I reached out to Stic and M1 from Dead Prez knowing they would be in town soon on tour. I shared the concept and beat and they took it on. We wrapped the whole song in about an hour and a half one afternoon before one of their shows in Portland.” – Mic Crenshaw
